Mazda has a guiding principle to promote environmental protection and contribute to a better society. We are fully committed to a policy of minimizing pollution and conserving world resources.
Mazda is aiming to reduce direct landfill waste to zero at all its domestic manufacturing plants (including development, administration and technology sections).
Over 75% of all plastic parts are suitable for recycling and all gaskets and brake-pads are asbestos-free. We use no ozone-damaging CFCs in polyurethane products such as the foam padding in seats, armrests and steering wheels.
We strive to use only the required amount of energy in the required place at the required time. Every step is taken to save energy where possible. In addition to this, we have for a significant time been operating a cogeneration system (generating heat and electricity at the same time), in our attempts to utilize energy in the most efficient way possible.
Mazda is committed to the prevention of global warming and as part of this commitment is working hard on research and development aimed at improving the fuel efficiency of its cars, thereby reducing the amount of CO2 emitted. Currently we are working on improving engine combustion, increasing transmission efficiency and reducing the weight of our vehicles, in order to be able to release passenger vehicles that meet Japanese 2010 fuel efficiency standards in all weight categories onto the market as soon as possible. All our plants pass stringent ISO test
Mazda has already attained ISO14001 certification for all of its main production bases worldwide as part of its environmental management system. The Hiroshima-based company is now examining the introduction of a separate certification system for the environmental management of its smaller offices, group companies, and suppliers that are not yet certified.
Mazda requested that its suppliers attain the ISO14001 designation, and by the end of fiscal 2004, 95 percent had attained the ISO certification.
